The Harley Davidson Shovelhead engine is a very nice engine. It has 2 cylinders which are at a 45° angle to each other. It was made by the HD factories from 1966 until 1984. The first years (from 1966 to 1978) the capacity of the block was 74 cu. That is converted to our metric system 1208 cc.
Starting in 1978, the capacity was increased to 82 cu resulting in a metric of 1343 cc. The blocks are standardly designated as 1200 cc and 1340 cc. The first 2 years (1978 and 1979) both engine block versions were produced. Harley's FLH models received this larger engine block from 1979/1980. The FX models were still delivered with the 1200 cc engine until 1981. From 1981 the FX model also got a 1340 cc Shovelhead engine.
On the outside of the Shovelhead engine you can see whether it is a 1200 cc or a 1340 cc engine. The 1200 cc version has 10 cooling fins on the cylinder and the 1340 cc version has 9 cooling fins.
The engines from 1966 to 1970 had another crankcase. In this crankcase a generator was incorporated. These engines are called "Early Shovelhead". From 1970 the crankcase got a built-in alternator. These models are called "Late Shovelhead".
